Four killed in suicide attack in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber blew himself up near the car of a senior police officer in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday, killing the officer, his driver and a guard, officials said.

District Superintendent Police Rasheed Khan’s vehicle was the target of the attack on Kohat Road in Peshawar.

One more person was reported have died, according to television reports.

Over a dozen people were also wounded, city administrator Siraj Ahmed said. He said that the police van was on a routine patrol on the outskirts of Peshawar when it came under attack.

“The bomber was a teenager, he came on foot and blew himself up near the police van,” Ahmed told AFP.

Umar Gul, a police officer at the scene, confirmed the suicide attack.

“We have recovered his head, the bomber was a young boy,” he said.

A bomb disposal squad official said the bomber was carrying 6-7 kilograms of explosives, which destroyed the police van.

Militants linked to al Qaeda and the Taliban have killed many police officials as well as senior security officers spearheading operations against their bases in the turbulent region bordering Afghanistan.
